Strategies for Counseling and Academic Coaching
May 31 & June 1, 2018

Session Descriptions

Session One
The Whole School Initiative: Guidance is the Key to Student Success
As students add their plan data online at My10yearPlan.com®, every teacher and administrator can access this important personalized data. Any teacher, counselor, or administrator with password-driven access, can gain a thorough understanding of a student's goals and ambitions by quickly retrieving and reviewing the 10-year Plan Summary page. In this session, participants will gain an understanding of the Freshman Transition/Get Focused...Stay Focused!® program, the comprehensive guidance coursework, and the online tools.

Session Two
Counseling Strategies for Counselors and Advisors Using the Data from My10yearPlan.com®
When students arrive for a counseling appointment, they'll have a carefully considered plan, developed through their comprehensive Get Focused...Stay Focused!® guidance coursework, that includes not only carefully chosen career path but also their realistic lifestyle expectations and goals. The counselor can quickly review the student's online 10-year Plan Summary and then use that information to more effectively begin the important advising process. Instead of spending an inordinate amount of time trying to determine what the student’s education, career, and life goals are, the 10-year Plan Summary data can be quickly reviewed, allowing the precious time together to be spent on productive and quantitative strategies to move forward their educational plans in the most efficient and effective way. In this session, you’ll learn about and practice these counseling strategies.

Session Three
My10yearPlan.com®: The Tool for the Whole School Initiative
In this computer-based, hands-on session, you’ll learn how to take your advisory functions to a whole new level with My10yearPlan.com®. You’ll see how this online enhancement provides faculty with a direct link to students’ carefully considered plans and allows students an easy way to update and share their plans. You’ll go online to practice accessing students’ 10-year Plan Summary pages and participate in group brainstorming on how to use the data found within.

Session Four
Academic Coaching Strategies for Instructors
Using simple coaching techniques taught by the school counseling staff or through a series of short online videos, every instructor can use the 10-year Plan as a motivator for academic excellence. For instance, when a student is not succeeding in their coursework, by sitting down together and reviewing the student’s online 10-year Plan Summary page, an outline of their carefully considered career and lifestyle goals, the instructor can point out -- in personalized terms -- the consequences of not following through with the effort necessary to gain the skills to succeed. Students who have completed a Career Choices series course understand the lifelong consequences of not applying themselves to their studies.

Understanding a student's carefully chosen career path or lifestyle expectations provides another opportunity for academic coaching. Instructors with those insights can provide support and personalization related to that future goal, even if only acknowledging the goal. Teachers throughout the school can quickly peruse each incoming student's plans. This knowledge provides an opportunity for the student to feel they are known when an instructor acknowledges their goals or makes personalized assignments that recognize their plans.

Session Five
The Skills-based Education Plan
In the highly competitive workplace of today, skills are the currency of career stability and career success. The Skills-based Education Plan, unique to the Career Choices and Changes curriculum and the Get Focused...Stay Focused!® program is a progressive education model that facilitates not only successful entry and completion of post-secondary work but, more important, successful entry into the workforce. When students have acquired and can articulate the skills required for their carefully chosen career pathway, employers will beat a path to their doorway.

This new model of educational planning supports the self-directed, life-long learning aptitude desired by employers today. In this session, participants will go online to experience a Skills-based Education Plan and learn strategies for supporting students in their development.

Session Six
Counselors Role in Instructional Leadership
As professionals, the counseling staff will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Whole School Initiative. The counseling staff can be charged with developing, promoting and executing professional development opportunities for all personnel on campus. During this session, participants will learn strategies for delivering this capacity building so all staff can access and use the data within the 10-year Plan Summary page for advisories and academic coaching. Sample workshop sessions will be provided for easy replication on your own campus. Participants will also identify, review, and brainstorm strategies for supporting the course instructors at key points in the delivery of the curriculum.
