Proven Strategies for Developing the High School/College Connection
Best Practices for Get Focused...Stay Focused!® High Schools and College Collaborations
June 5 & 6, 2018

Session Descriptions

Session One
What is the Get Focused...Stay Focused!® Model and How Do I Get My Campus on Board?
In the opening session, participants review the research that supports high school/college collaboration so, when returning to their campuses, they can make a convincing argument as to why this effort is vital to students’ lifelong success. In the process of learning about the Get Focused...Stay Focused!® program, participants will be exposed to resources that will make their task of getting “buy in” on their campuses workable. Participants will leave with the tools to make this process easy and efficient.

Session Two
Duel Credit Strategies that Work
Dual enrollment and articulation are exciting optional components of the Get Focused...Stay Focused!® Initiative. In this session, you’ll hear from practitioners who have been involved with dual credit programs. You’ll discuss the complexities of navigating two educational systems, which will highlight strategies for K12‐community college relationship building. You’ll learn about strategies you can take back to your own system as you hear about the logistics of the successful dual enrollment program at SBCC and about articulation with southern California schools.

Session Three
The Freshman Course: Helping Students Get Focused from the Start
Whether you are planning to launch a Freshman Transition Initiative course in your high school or a First‐Year Experience course at your college, you will learn strategies to plan and launch your Get Focused freshman course with success. You’ll also learn about the role of counselors in your K‐12 and postsecondary partnerships along with details about the myriad professional development opportunities available to support you and your team in launching your Freshman Transition Initiative—whether at high school or college. The goal of this strand is to equip you with a thorough understanding of what it takes to help every single student Get Focused!

Session Four
Best Practices from the Field: High School/College Collaboration Models that Work
College and high school practitioners will share their strategies for building these active collaborations. This includes not only what works but, using their vast experience, will also highlight possible landmines to watch out for. Always popular is a panel of administrators (some via video uplink) who work with dual credit programs, audience Q & A to address any topic related to high school/college collaborations, and information on giving college credit for the Career Choices/Freshman Transition 9th grade course. By the end of this session, participants will leave with beginning plans of what can work for their collaborations.
