Strand Focus: Integrating Technology into Your Career Choices Course
Session Descriptions

Session 1:
Blended Learning

Delve into the mixed-up world of blended learning and gain practical strategies for enhancing your Career Choices course using CareerChoices.com, LifestyeMath.com, and My10yearPlan.com. We’ll cover a variety of hints for managing a hybrid (part textbookbased, part web-based) comprehensive guidance course, and you’ll leave with research and pedagogical theory supporting hybrid learning, great resources to help create buy-in for integrating technology into your Career Choices course.

Session 2:
CareerChoices.com: Tools Designed to Grow with Your Students—Even Once They’re Not Your Students

Many state and commercial web-based tools use fixed assessments and surveys that paint decision-making as magical. Just a few quick clicks of the mouse and (poof) “You should be a butcher…a baker…a candlestick maker.” This session explores technology integration through CareerChoices.com, a dynamic web portal where students experience real-world research tools that support their career and life decision-making process without usurping it.

Session 3:
Cutting-Edge Math Courtesy of LifestyleMath.com

Leave the theoretical mathematics to the supercomputers at NASA. In this session, we’ll focus on that other “cutting-edge math”—the kind of practical, everyday math every student needs and we’ll explore the online tool that makes teaching it realistic. You’ll work through the math problems students experience as they compile budget projections for the life they envision for their 29-year-old selves. At the same time, you’ll experience some instructional techniques you might want to employ in your own classroom.

Session 4:
My10yearPlan.com: Set-up and Management FAQs

This hands-on session will be a lot more exciting than it sounds. Promise. You’ll learn tricks for getting student accounts set up quickly and explore new resources for supporting your students’ experience with My10yearPlan.com.

Session 5:
My10yearplan.com® ESSENTIALS

Get online and experience the various optional resources and reports available with this progressive educational tool. Even if you are currently using My10yearPlan.com, you’ll learn about some of the newest additions to this online enhancement.

Session 6:
My10yearPlan.com INTERACTIVE

Step into your student shoes for this hour and we’ll jump feet-first into the newest online enhancement, which incorporates all 100 activities in Career Choices. Join the CAST (Critical and Strategic Thinkers) as they help propel you through this organic decisionmaking process. You’ll also get to preview a selection of new motivational videos, hosted by Olympic Gold Medalist Dain Blanton and designed to introduce each chapter in Career Choices.

Session 7:
Using High-Tech to Provide High-Touch: Academic Coaching and Advisory Strategies with My10yearPlan.com

Using the My10yearPlan.com Summary Page (from either the Advisory or Interactive level), learn about strategies and tips that will imbed students’ 10-year plans into the culture of your school. You’ll leave this session with tips for getting all school staff excited about having online access to students’ summary pages.
