While principal of McCormick High School in South Carolina, Bobby Cunningham garnered national attention as a turnaround principal when the reforms he implemented propelled his school’s rating from “Below Average” to one of two “Excellent” schools in the state—all within one year!
This strand was designed to provide administrators with the tools to successfully implement a Freshman Transition initiative to improve academic achievement as part of their redesign efforts. Based on The George Washington University’s Freshman Transition Initiative model, participants will apply that framework as they develop a plan to transform their school culture into a collaborative learning community focused on results.
Throughout the sessions, Principal Cunningham will guide participants in using authentic data from their own school/district to:
- Identify the core values within the community, district, and school
- Establish measurable and attainable evidence to support their freshman efforts
- Develop at least four goals for the Freshman Transition initiative based on the data
- Strategize how to make staff assignments and build collaborative teams
Participating administrators will leave with their own strategic plan including goals, activities, timelines, responsibilities, costs, funding sources, and evidence..
